Plastisol vs. Water Based Screen Printing / Know the Difference

Plastisol Screen Printing

Composition: PVC (polyvinyl chloride) resin and plasticizer particles; a 100% solid system containing no solvents.

Feel (Hand): Heavier and thicker; sits as a raised layer on top of the garment.

Breathability: Lower; can block fabric pores over the printed area.

Appearance: Bold, bright, and opaque colors that pop strongly even on dark garments.

Ease of Use: Very forgiving and beginner-friendly. It does not dry on the screen, allowing long work times.

Cleanup: Requires chemical solvents and special wash.

Curing: Solidifies quickly when heated to about 300°F–350°F

Water-Based Screen Printing

Composition: Pigments suspended in a water-based acrylic or solvent medium.

Feel (Hand): Extremely soft, as the ink absorbs directly into the fabric fibers rather than sitting on top.

Breathability: High; fabric remains porous and cool.

Appearance: Softer, more vintage look; colors are generally less vibrant on dark fabrics unless using specialized opaque high-solids acrylics (HSAs).

Ease of Use: Harder for beginners. It dries quickly and can clog screens if left unattended.

Cleanup: Easy cleanup using plain water.

Curing: Requires complete moisture evaporation and heat curing
