A DTF transfer only looks professional when it's sized for the garment it's going on. Use the charts below to find your starting point for tees, hoodies, kids' sizes, hats, and more — then fine-tune it yourself in one of our print tools before you order.
Adult T-Shirts
Full front and full back prints scale up as the shirt gets bigger — a design sized for a Small will look lost on a 2XL, and one sized for a 2XL will hang off the shoulders of a Small. Use the ranges below as your starting width for a centered design.

These are starting widths for a centered design — height will vary with your artwork's proportions.
Hoodies & Sweatshirts
Heavier fabric and a roomier cut mean hoodies and crewnecks can carry a slightly bigger design than a tee in the same size. As a rule of thumb, add about an inch to full front/back sizing and a half inch to chest or sleeve placements.

Youth & Toddler
Kids' sizes run smaller across the board, not just proportionally smaller versions of adult charts — a youth Small needs a noticeably smaller print than an adult Small, and toddler sizes smaller still.

Hats & Caps
The curve of a front panel is the limiting factor here, not the fabric — go too wide or too tall and the transfer won't lay flat under the press, no matter what size hat it's going on.

Pockets, Sleeves & Neck Tags
These smaller placements are meant to be seen up close, not read from across a room — keep the design simple and legible at a small size rather than trying to shrink a full-front design down to fit.

Tote & Duffle Bags
Bag panels are generally flatter and more forgiving than garments, but seams and handles still need to be avoided — check the panel you're printing on before committing to a size.

Placement Tips, From Experience
Center it below the collar, not against it
For a full front print, land the top edge about 2–3″ below the collar seam. Right up against the seam reads as too high once the shirt is worn.
Size to the garment, not one default
A hoodie can carry more than a tee in the same size, and kids' sizes need noticeably smaller art. Use the chart for the specific piece you're printing.
Find true center before you press
Fold the garment in half vertically to mark the centerline, or use your press's laser guide. Our Gang Sheet Builder also lets you check alignment before you print.
Avoid seams, zippers, and pouches
Heat doesn't transfer evenly over hardware or bulky seams. Shift the design slightly to land on a flat panel instead.
Keep transfers off stretch zones
Ribbed collars, cuffs, and elastic waistbands move under heat and wear, which can crack or distort a print over time. Stay clear of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size transfer should I use for an adult t-shirt?
For most adult tees, plan on 9″–10″ wide for a centered full front on S–L, and 10.5″–11.5″ for XL and up. See the Adult T-Shirts chart above for your exact size.
Do youth and toddler sizes need a different chart?
Yes — kids' garments aren't just scaled-down adult sizes. A youth Small typically needs only a 7.5″ wide print, where an adult Small needs 9″ or more.
Can I reuse the same design at a different size?
Yes, as long as your artwork file is high enough resolution to scale up cleanly. Our Gang Sheet Builder lets you resize freely before you print.
What's the biggest transfer I can put on a hat?
Around 3.5″–4″ wide and no taller than about 2.5″. Anything bigger won't sit flat across the curve of the front panel.
